The Georgetown Palace Theatre, a cherished landmark in Central Texas, finds itself in dire straits following severe flooding caused by a winter storm that swept through the region on January 24. The floodwaters accumulated over several days due to a failed sump pump system, an unfortunate consequence of the theater's proximity to a natural spring. These pumps, integral for preventing water accumulation in the theater, failed during the freeze, resulting in significant damage to this 100-year-old venue.
Extent of Damage and Immediate Consequences
When staff finally entered the theater after the storm, knee-deep water greeted them inside, highlighting the extent of the flooding. Approximately 55 seats from the first three rows were destroyed, along with the carpeting and vital audiovisual equipment. This equipment, essential for creating an engaging experience for guests, was stored beneath the stage and is now rendered unusable.
Executive Artistic Director Ron Watson expressed the overwhelming feeling of loss. "By the time we arrived, the damage was already done," Watson stated. He estimates repair costs around $200,000 and is uncertain how much insurance will cover. The cancellation of multiple performances, including the highly anticipated closing weekends of Disney's "Frozen," further exacerbated the financial strain on the theater.

Despite these challenges, the Georgetown Palace Theatre's staff is not backing down. Collaboration with the Georgetown Independent School District has facilitated plans for relocating the production of "Swing! The Musical" to the nearby Klett Center for the Performing Arts. Heater expressed gratitude for the district’s timely support, enabling the show to proceed despite adversity.

Although the timeline for fixing the theater remains uncertain, the team is committed to returning to their roots with an upcoming production of "Oklahoma!" scheduled for March 20.
